Physical Education Courses

PE 103: Sports and Physical Fitness

Offered: Fall and Spring

Techniques and skills of physical activities are introduced with objectives of developing and maintaining lifetime fitness.

PE 118: Cardio Kickboxing

Offered: As needed

Cardio Kickboxing is an aerobic activity using kickboxing moves such as jabs, kicks, knee-blocks, bob and weaves, etc. The kickboxing moves elevate the heart rate to improve cardiorespiratory conditioning and to burn calories.

PE 119: Aerobic Dance

Offered: As needed

Activity of aerobic dance led by a certified instructor with objectives of improving level of health-related fitness.

PE 120: Advanced Aerobics and Body Sculpting

Offered: As needed

This course will include a 30-minute aerobic workout, as well as a total-body toning and stretching segment. Free weights, weight machines and resistance tubing will be used in the toning and sculpting segment, as well as gravity-resistant exercises.

PE 121: Advanced Body Sculpting and Weight Training

Offered: As needed

This course will include total-body shaping and muscle-toning exercises using resistance tubing, free weights, weight machines, and exercises incorporating gravity resistance.

PE 122: Stretch and Flexibility Physical Education

Offered: As needed

This class will take you from head to toe, stretching your muscles and increasing your flexibility. Flexibility is one of the components of fitness that is often not emphasized, but is equally important as strength and endurance for a balanced and fit body.

PE 124: Beginning Yoga

Offered: As needed

This class will involve several beginning Yoga poses that will help to create strength, flexibility, endurance, and balance for the participant.

PE 128: Beginning Swimming

Offered: Fall

Instruction in basic swimming and water survival techniques. This course is designed for non-swimmers.

1 credit hour

PE 129: Intermediate Swimming

Prerequisites: PE 128 or swimming competency

Offered: Fall

Instruction in the fundamentals of standard strokes and basic diving and water safety skills.

1 credit hour

PE 130: Cross-Fit Cardio

Offered: As needed

Cross-Fit Cardio consists of a warm-up, a high-intensity cardio workout, and end-of-class stretching. The high-intensity cardio workout will include squats, sprinting, bodyweight exercises, etc., in various combinations every week.

PE 201: Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Physical Education

Prerequisites: Declared Physical Education major or permission of instructor

Offered: Spring

An historical study of the development of sports and physical education. A contrast of philosophies and how they affected this development is presented. Students are required to examine the three basic philosophical questions and develop a personal philosophy of physical education.

3 credit hours

PE 222: Advanced Swimming

Offered: Fall

Instruction in the refinement and structure of the five major swimming strokes: Australian Crawl, Breast Stroke, Elementary Back Stroke, Competition Back Stroke and the Side Stroke. This course is designed for the Sports and Fitness Programs Management major.

PE 223: Lifeguard Training

Offered: Fall

Instruction in Lifeguard skills, CPR, AED, and First Aid Training, leading to American Red Cross Advanced Lifeguard Training Certification.

PE 228: Advanced Yoga

Advanced Yoga will include more advanced poses than beginning yoga, challenging the students’ balance, strength, and flexibility.

1 credit hour

PE 273: Team Sport Skills

Prerequisites: Declared Physical Education major or permission of instructor

Offered: Fall

This course is designed to assist students in the acquisition of skills and rules of selected team sports.

3 credit hours

PE 274: Individual Sport Skills

Prerequisites: Declared Physical Education major or permission of instructor

Offered: Spring

This course is designed to assist students in the acquisition of skills and rules of selected individual sports.

3 credit hours

PE 301: Structural Biomechanics

Prerequisites: MATH 110 or higher, BIOL 211, PHSC 105 or PHYS 211 or junior status; declared Physical Education major or permission of instructor

Offered: Fall

A study of anatomical and mechanical phenomena, which underlie human motion.

3 credit hours

PE 311: Measurement and Evaluation in Physical Education

Prerequisites: MATH 110 or higher; declared Physical Education major or permission of instructor

Offered: Fall

An analysis of statistical techniques, tests, and other forms of measurement used in assessment and evaluation in physical education. Opportunities are provided for administering, scoring, and interpreting tests.

3 credit hours

PE 321: Physiology of Exercise

Prerequisites: MATH 110 or higher, BIOL 211; declared Physical Education major or permission of instructor

Offered: Fall

A study of human biological functions and their physiological responses to stress.

3 credit hours

PE 351: Motor Development and Motor Learning

Prerequisites: PE 301, EDUC 305, EDUC 320; declared Physical Education major or permission of instructor

Offered: Spring

This course is designed to present neutral, physiological, perceptual, and cognitive changes that occur over the lifespan of an individual. Emphasis is placed on forming hierarchies that enable assessment and prescription.

3 credit hours

PE 371: Methods and Materials for Elementary Physical Education

Prerequisites: Admission to the Teacher Education Program and junior status; declared Physical Education major or permission of instructor

Offered: Fall

An introduction to curriculum, practice and content in the field areas of health and physical education for elementary children. Opportunities are provided for field experience with The June Buchanan School. A field experience of 25 hours is required.

3 credit hours

PE 375: Methods and Materials for Secondary Physical Education

Prerequisites: Senior status; PE 273, 274; must be declared Physical Education P-12 or Sports and Fitness Programs Management major with PE majors admitted to the TEP, or permission of instructor

Offered: Spring

An introduction to curriculum, approaches, and content appropriate for secondary students. Students must also schedule an activity class in which to intern. A field experience of 10 hours is required.

3 credit hours

PE 390: Independent Study

Prerequisites: Junior status and permission of instructor

Offered: As needed

This course will offer Physical Education majors an opportunity to do direct and concentrated study in an area of physical education not pursued in the regular course offerings.

1-3 credit hours

PE 401: Adapted Physical Education

Prerequisites: PE 351, declared Physic Education major or declared Sports and Fitness Programs Management major, or permission of instructor

Offered: Spring

An examination of legal aspects, principles, and methods for meeting the needs of exceptional students in physical education. Experience is provided in cooperation with Knott County Central High School. A field experience of 20 hours is required.

3 credit hours

PE 405: Psychology of Sport

Prerequisites: PSY 101, SOC 101 and senior status; declared Physical Education major or permission of instructor

Offered: Fall

An overview of behavioral science in physical activity. The role and effects of physical activity in modern society is discussed along with appreciation, enjoyment, and improvement of individual performance.

3 credit hours

PE 406: Sociology of Sport

Prerequisites: Declared Physical Education major or permission of instructor

Offered: Spring

Sociology of sport is the study of social theories, aspects and interactions of people and how they relate to sport and activity. Religion, education, politics, economics, family, violence, gender, social mobility, the media and other aspects of life are all involved in sport whether they be good or bad.

3 credit hours

PE 421: Principles of Physical Fitness

Prerequisites: PE 301, PE 321; declared Physical Education major or permission of instructor

Offered: Spring

In addition to participation in a fitness program, program design and exercise prescription will be discussed. This course can prepare a student for ACSM certification.

3 credit hours

PE 425: Advanced Fundamentals

Prerequisites: PE 253, 274, 273, 301, 251, and 405; declared Physical Education major or permission of instructor

Offered: Fall

This is an advanced course in teaching motor skills for sports and activities. The course will involve in-depth teaching and analysis of motor skills mechanics. Video making will be required to facilitate and enhance the teaching and analysis of skills. Students will also learn to organize, operate and teach in a sport camp environment. Presentations of technical skills will be required. This is a senior level capstone course.

PE 440-450: Special Topics

Prerequisites: Senior status or permission of instructor

Offered: As needed

Occasionally, when there is a need and opportunity, a course may be offered on a topic that can be beneficial to the physical educator.
