Scholarships
Alice Lloyd College guarantees no out-of-pocket costs for tuition to all accepted full-time students from our 108-county service area in Appalachia. This generous financial aid package is made possible through the private support of alumni, friends, churches, organizations, foundations, and businesses across America. A gift to one of our scholarship funds offers central Appalachian students quality educational opportunities with little or no accumulation of debt.
General Scholarship Fund
Each year, approximately 30% of our operating income is used to provide student aid in the form of scholarship grants. A gift to the general scholarship fund provides financial assistance to one or more students during the year in which the gift is made.
Student Work Scholarship Fund
All full-time students attending Alice Lloyd College are required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week in our Student Work Program to help pay for the cost of education. Gifts to the student work scholarship fund help cover student wages during the year in which the gifts are made.
Endowed Scholarship Fund
Gifts to establish or add to endowed scholarship funds are held and invested with only the income being used to provide annual scholarships. Endowed scholarships may be named for the donor(s) or in honor of another person. Certain guidelines may be imposed to restrict the scholarship to a particular major, grade point average, etc. A minimum corpus amount of $10,000 is suggested in order for the endowment fund to earn a reasonable amount for annual scholarship awards. Donors receive yearly status reports, including information on the student scholarship recipients.
Caney Cottage Scholarship Fund
Alice Lloyd College has always encouraged its outstanding students to continue their education toward graduate and professional degrees—especially those who make a commitment to return to their home areas to serve in leadership positions. The Caney Cottage Scholarship assists such students on a competitive basis. Recipients are selected based on high academic ability, strong moral character, and potential for leadership. One form of this scholarship is rent-free housing in the College-owned H.N. and Frances C. Berger Residence Hall, which is located near the University of Kentucky campus. Selected students attending other universities are granted cash scholarships toward tuition. A gift toward the Caney Cottage Scholarship Fund can be a current-year renewable scholarship or an endowed scholarship.
Academic Awards Fund
At the end of each spring semester, Alice Lloyd College holds its annual Honors and Awards Ceremony to recognize students for academic excellence and character. Awards are given for specific classes, majors, class rank, character, etc. Gifts to the academic awards fund provide cash awards to outstanding students selected by the Honors and Awards Committee. Donors may prefer to endow an award, thereby having the privilege of naming the award, selecting the academic area, and stipulating guidelines on choosing recipients.
