The Student Work Program at Alice Lloyd College
At Alice Lloyd College, the Student Work Program has become an
integral part of the educational experience. The program is intended to be not
only an earning experience but a learning experience as well. It offers students
a
sense of self-fulfillment and responsibility. Like all other aspects of the
educational process at Alice Lloyd College, the Student Work Program is designed to
provide the students with the tools of leadership.
Alice Lloyd College is proud of the fact that it has never turned a
student away because of financial status or need. Since the founding of the
institution in 1923 - then called Caney Junior College - very few of the Appalachian
students, or their families, have been able to pay the costs of a college education.
Today, that trend continues. In the early days, penniless students provided
what they could in
exchange for their education - farm products
and labor. Indeed these initial student workers actually built some of the buildings
still in use on campus. A tradition grew that required every Caney student to work
part-time, and that tradition continues today in the form of the Student Work Program.
All full-time students are required to work a minimum of ten hours per week while classes are in session. Those who need extra money can work up to fifteen hours per week. In addition, many students are employed full-time in the summer to allow them to earn money toward their educational expenses for the next year.
The Director of the Student Work Program assigns positions to students on the basis of work background, personal preference and the needs of the College. Jobs range from tutoring fellow students to working in the kitchen; from secretarial and maintenance assignments to specialized jobs in the field of media communications. By students performing many of the tasks which would otherwise require hiring additional employees, the College can invest its money where it's needed most - in its students.
