Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles softball team played host to the Hiwassee Tigers on April 16th. Following are recaps from the double-header.
GAME 1
HC – 7 | Alice Lloyd – 4
The visitors scored all of their runs in the opening two innings and made them hold up to earn the victory in the opener. The home club spread their 4 runs across seven innings. Unfortunately, they were unable to string together a flurry of hits when they most needed it.
Haley Howell went three innings and took the loss on the mound. McKenzie Brewer came on and pitched well in relief.
GAME 2
HC – 9 | Alice Lloyd – 7 (Nine Innings)
The Lady Eagles jumped out 4-0 but eventually fell in extra innings in a hard-fought contest.
The Lady Eagles got a home-run from Samantha Sturgill to propel them to the 4-0 cushion. However, Hiwassee began to mount a comeback bid with 3 in the third.
After ALC plated another run in the third inning, HC then added 2 in the seventh to knot the score at 5-5.
In the eight, Hiwassee scored 1 run only to be matched by the hosts on a sacrifice bunt (6-6).
In the ninth, the Tigers got 3 huge runs to vault ahead 9-6.
In their final attempt, ALC scored 1 run and had the tying run at the plate. Unfortunately, HC made a great diving catch on a blooper to end the contest.
On the mound, Mercedez Gilliam went seven innings and allowed only 3 earned runs. Mckenzie Brewer took the hard-luck loss in relief.
