Pippa Passes, KY: The home-standing Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles saw seven players score at least eight points as they earned an impressive 96-73 conference victory over the Asbury University Lady Eagles. The matchup took place Thursday, January 10th.
In the opening two minutes of the game, Asbury guard Autumn Herriford scored five quick points to stake her club to a 7-2 advantage. The lead did not last for long.
Over the next six minutes, ALC would rely on their balanced attack to roll off a stunning 17-2 blitz and vault ahead 19-9. They would lead 21-13 after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the visitors would get within two (23-21) at 8:21, only to witness another Alice Lloyd spurt.
The host Eagles would turn up the heat on both ends. When ALC sophomore Shelby Davis converted a drive in the paint with 3:04 remaining, the score stood 41-23. Her hoop capped off an eye-opening 18-2 streak in five minutes of action.
The home fans were tickled to see a comfortable 46-30 cushion at intermission.
As the third period began, Alice Lloyd would maintain their dominance and stretch the advantage to twenty-five points (70-45). The period-ending buzzer showed they would head into the final stanza in total command, 70-47.
In the last quarter, ALC Coach John Mills was able to utilize his squad’s depth as he witnessed his lead reach its zenith (81-51). The Lady Eagles would cruise to the finish line to earn the satisfying victory
For Alice Lloyd (9-5; 6-2 RSC), sophomore guard Haley Hall led an impressive team effort with 13 points and 3 blocks. The sophomore duo of Davis and guard Ali May were right behind with 11 points apiece.
Junior guard Katie Moore contributed 9 points and 5 rebounds while senior Emilee Harrell, sophomore forward McKayla Akers, and freshman guard Hannah Kash all chipped in with 8 points.
Akers tied for rebounding honors with 6, while Kash dished off 5 assists.
The winning club finished shooting 47.9% (35-73) from the field and a solid 46.9% (15-32) from long range. They connected on an impressive 91.2% (11-12) from the foul line. They also added 45 rebounds, 21 assists, and 3 steals.
Asbury (4-13; 1-6 RSC) was led by Herriford and Kelsey Johnson, each with 18 points. Their club finished shooting 33.8% (27-80) from the floor and just 26.9% (7-26) from behind the arc. They shot 92.3% (12-13) from the foul line. They also added 37 rebound, 12 assists, and 8 steals.
Alice Lloyd will return to the hardwood this week for two huge cross-division conference matchups. Tuesday, January 15th’s game is at the River States Conference Eastern Division leader, the West Virginia Tech Lady Golden Bears at 5:30 pm. They return home on Saturday, January 19th for a 3:00 pm showdown against #25 Rio Grande University at 1:00 pm.
