On Saturday, October 27th, the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles volleyball squad traveled to Johnson University to face the highly regarded Johnson University Lady Warriors and the Welch College Flames in a road match. They followed that up on Monday, October 29th with a contest at the University of Pikeville. The three matches conclude the away portion of this year’s regular season schedule.

In the opening game, the Eagles battled hard and the score remained close until the Lady Royals pulled away down the stretch for a 25-18 win. In game 2, the two clubs fought in a match that mirrored the first one. Once again, Johnson pulled away late to win 25-18. Game 3 showed why JU is a top-five squad nationally as they took control early to win 25-13.

On the day for ALC, junior Samantha Sturgill paved the way in assists with 8 and tied in digs with 12 while adding 3 kills. Classmate Alexis Napier tied in digs with 12 and added 3 kills. Freshman Sara Howard led in kills with 4 while contributing 10 digs.

In the second match, the Eagles looked tired in Game 1 and were never able to mount a run in dropping a 25-12 decision. Both clubs looked evenly matched in game 2 as ALC regrouped. After a tense battle that went to extra points, WC clawed out the hard-earned 30-28 win. In game 3, Welch needed just one more win for the sweep and they managed to pull away late from the scrappy Eagles for the 25-17 win.

On the day for ALC, junior Alexis Napier led with 5 kills and added 12 digs while classmate Samantha Sturgill led the way in assists with 13 and added 14 digs. Fellow juniors Lindsey Perkins who led in digs with 21 while adding 4 kills, and Haley Smith who chipped in with 17 digs also stepped up. The freshman duo of Sara Howard and Madison Fralix contributed 17 digs and 4 kills to the cause.

Pikeville Bears

In the opening game, the Eagles took an early lead only to watch UPike blitz ahead for the big 25-10 win. In game 2, the visitors only trailed by one (14-13) before the host club ripped off an 11-4 spurt to close out and win 25-17. Game 3 saw the Lady Bears take a slight lead early and slowly pull away for the clinching 25-16 victory.

On the day for ALC, junior Lindsey Perkins led in kills with 7 while adding 5 digs while junior Samantha Sturgill paved the way in both assists and digs with 11 and 9 respectively.

ALC (9-14) returns to the court this Tuesday for their final home match of the season vs Bluefield State College at 5:00 pm. They then travel to Johnson University on Thursday for the opening match of the NCCAA Mideast Regional Tournament against an opponent to be determined based on the final seeding.
