OAKLAND CITY, In. – The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles softball team concluded their season in the Mideast Regional Tournament held on May 8th- 9th. The double-elimination tournament was hosted by the Oakland City University Lady Oaks.

Oakland City – 8 | ALC – 0

Alice Lloyd only allowed 6 hits, but unfortunately had a perfect game thrown against them as they dropped game one.

The Oaks scored two in the opening inning on a walk, an RBI single, and an error. They would add a run one inning later fueled by a wild pitch and an error.

The home club would then add insurance runs in both the third and fourth innings, plate two runs in the fifth, and cross one more in the sixth to account for their 8 runs.

In the meantime, the Lady Eagle bats were completely befuddled by the outstanding pitching from Whitney Jeffers. Jeffers faced 18 batters and fanned them all as she tossed a perfect game. She allowed 0 hits, gave up 0 walks, and struck out 9 batters.

For ALC, Mercedez Gilliam allowed 5 hits, 5 earned runs, and 7 total runs in her four innings of work. She whiffed 2. Morgan Albury tossed the final two innings and allowed 1 hit and 1 run while striking out 1.

Oakland City – 12 | ALC – 4

Alice Lloyd dropped to the loser’s bracket to await their next opponent. It turns out, they would face Oakland City once more after they fell to top-seeded Belhaven, Mississippi, 6-0.

In game two, the first inning saw Lady Eagle Kaitlyn Clark-Wyatt smack a double to quickly end the hitless drought, but she remained stranded on base. One inning later, Jada Estep would reach third following an error, bunt, and stolen base, but frustratingly, she would not score.

With two outs in the bottom of the second, the Oaks would get one single and two walks to load the bases. The contest’s opening run crossed on a wild pitch, while two more scored on a single to left field.

Trailing 3-0, heading into the top of the third, ALC responded in a big way. Lydia McIntosh opened things with a single and advanced to second on Alexis Napier’s perfectly executed bunt-single. After McKenzie Brewer hit the third consecutive single, the bases were loaded.

The momentum continued when Clark-Wyatt, Shelby Blankenship, and Estep followed with singles of their own to tie the score. When Madison Gaines later grounded out, it permitted the go-ahead run to cross the plate and give the visitors a 4-3 advantage.

Unfortunately, OCU was ready with a response of their own in their next at-bat. Six hits and two errors would open the floodgates for six big runs to score. Suddenly OCU led 9-4. They would then add three insurance runs in the next two innings to close the contest.

For the victors, Whitney Jeffers started the contest and understandably, did not have the same accuracy as she did in the previous perfect game she tossed. She allowed 7 hit and 4 runs in two innings of work but was rescued by Valerie Lewis who took the win in relief.

ALC used three pitchers on the day. Morgan Albury threw two innings while Clark-Wyatt and Mercedez Gilliam each pitched in relief. Clark-Wyatt suffered the loss on the mound. The three combined to allow 10 hits with 3 strikeouts and 9 walks. Of the 12 runs given up, half of them were unearned.

Oakland City only outhit the Lady Eagles 10-8 with Clark-Wyatt’s 2 hits paving the way in the losing effort.

The hosts only won the hitting battle 6-5 as McKenzie Brewer had 2 hits for the visiting Eagles

Deana Phillips allowed five hits over seven innings and struck out four batters to earn the win on the mound. For ALC, Kaitlyn Clark-Wyatt started the game as she allowed 6 hits and 6 runs with 3 strikeouts.
