PIPPA PASSES, Ky. – The Alice Lloyd College Eagle’s baseball team hosted New River on Tuesday afternoon for a two-game series. Below are recaps of each contest.
April 10
Game One
ALC – 5 | NR – 4
The Eagles came from behind to win in extra innings. The contest saw NR grab a 1-0 advantage after two innings, but the Eagles would bounce back in the third to take the lead. First, Issac Stephens doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Juan Lander. Next, Adam Carnahan would hit a sacrifice fly to score Bryce Tucker. Finally, Dalton Cornett would line a double to score Gavan Rupe. Suddenly, the home squad led 3-1.
New River would earn one run back in the fourth on a fielder’s choice and then tie the game in the sixth on a double and a single. Neither club scored in the seventh which led to extra innings.
The visitors would regain the lead in the top half of the eight as Wyatt Sowers singled, advanced to third on two groundouts, and then scored on a clutch hit from Thomas Beach.
Entering the bottom of the inning, and desperately needing a score to stay alive, ALC responded. Adam Carnahan opened with a single and was followed by another single from Dalton Cornett. Next, Peyton Buford delivered a clutch single of his own to score Carnahan and knot things at 4-4. The runners then advanced to second and third on the throw home. Now knowing a hit would clinch the win, Ethan Osborne rapped the squad’s fourth consecutive single to drive in the game winner.
Tanner Verst earned the victory on the pitcher’s mound. He went three innings, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out two and walking none. Sowers took the loss for New River as he allowed eight hits and five runs over seven innings, striking out four.
Dalton Cornett went 2-4 to lead the hosts, who won the hitting battle, 8-7.
Game Two
ALC – 3 | NR – 0
Eagle pitcher Jaycob Banks threw a six-hit shutout to propel his team to a 3-0 victory. The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Ethan Osborne doubled to left. After the catcher dropped a called third strike allowing the runners to advance, Osborne scored on a sacrifice fly from Zac Salyers. Wyatt Crisp kept the momentum rolling as he singled. Then New River made a costly error on a groundball, which permitted two Eagles to score. When the dust had settled, Alice Lloyd now led 3-0. From that point, Banks controlled the game from the pitcher’s mound as he kept his foes at bay to earn the victory.
On the mound, Banks was impressive as he went the distance, allowing no runs on six hits while whiffing seven and walking zero. Thomas Beach took the loss for New River. He lasted six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out five and walking zero.
Ethan Osborne, Wyatt Crisp, and Mason Schroeder each collected two hits for ALC, who won the hitting battle 7-6.
