Wilmore, KY: Senior twin guards Miranda and Kayla Wilson were up to their old tricks as the duo combined for 34 points and 15 rebounds to spark the visiting Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles to an impressive 74-63 conference win over the Asbury University Lady Eagles. The matchup took place Tuesday night.
In the opening quarter, the two clubs played evenly as they traded buckets the majority of the way. The period ended with ALC clinging to a 16-15 advantage.
In the second period, the tide turned dramatically. With the score tied at 21 and less than seven minutes left in the first half, ALC would combine solid defense with good offense to dominate the remainder of the quarter. The visiting Eagles went on an impressive 17-3 run to finish the stanza and would enter the locker room at the half with a substantial 38-24 advantage.
As the third period began, the hometown club was determined to make a game of things and opened the quarter on a 7-0 spurt to slice the deficit to seven (38-31). Fortunately, Alice Lloyd would refocus and push the lead back to double-digits. The girls from Caney would still lead 58-47 entering the home-stretch.
In the last stanza, ALC would leave no doubt as to which was the better team on this night as they went on a 14-2 run in the fourth quarter to take a 20-point lead, it’s largest of the game. AU closed the game on an 11-2 run, but it was too little too late.
For Alice Lloyd (12-2; 7-1 RSC), Miranda Wilson sank 6-10 field goals (5-7 3pt FG) to lead the way with 21 points. She added 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Sister Kayla finished with 13 points (3-5 3pt FG), 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Also reaching double figures were freshman center Alexandria Clifton with 12 points and junior guard Courtney Vasquez with 10 points. Sophomore forward Jayla Spurlock added 5 assists and 3 blocks.
Alice Lloyd finished shooting 39.1% (25-64) from the field and 41.4% (12-29) from long range. Impressively, they connected on a perfect 100% (12-12) from the foul line. They also added 44 rebounds, 19 assists, and 5 steals.
Asbury U, (5-12; 2-5 RSC) was led by guard Autumn Herriford with 22 points. Her club finished shooting 32.3% (20-62) from the floor and 25% (6-24) from behind the arc. They shot 94.4% (17-18) from the foul line. They also added 38 rebound, 14 assists, and 5 steals.
ALC returns to conference action on Thursday, January 16th when they travel to Rio Grande, Ohio to face the to face the NAIA’s 21st ranked squad, the 18-1 Rio Grande Red Storm in a major matchup at 5:30 pm.
