RICHMOND, Ind. – The NAIA’S 12th ranked Indiana University East Lady Red Wolves earned a 91-76 victory over River States Conference West Division-leading Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles on January 6.
In the opening stanza, Lady Eagle senior standout Miranda Wilson scored five quick points to spark her club to a 12-7 advantage four minutes in. IU East then rode the play of guard Kristen Miller to close the period on a 16-4 run, and her club would take a 23-16 lead at the horn.
The second period saw East maintain their offensive efficiency. They would outscore the visitors 28-22, and pull ahead by 13 (51-38) at intermission.
In the second half, ALC senior guard Kayla Wilson would pump in 8 quick points and help breathe life into her squad. Her second trifecta at 7:07 made the score 55-48, and gave the girls from Caney Creek hopes for a comeback. Unfortunately, IUS used an 11-0 run late in the third quarter and into the fourth quarter that turned a 69-59 lead into an 80-59 advantage. Even though they refused to go away, the surge was just too much for Alice Lloyd to overcome.
For ALC (10-2; 5-1 RSC) they were led once again by Kayla and Miranda Wilson with 18 and 15 points respectively. Kayla added 6 assists and 3 rebounds while Miranda contributed team-highs of 7 rebounds and 7 assists. However, no other player would reach double-digit scoring. Freshman center Alexandria Clifton chipped in with 3 blocks while sophomore forward Jayla Spurlock nabbed 3 steals.
For IU East, (11-7; 3-2 RSC), Miller led all scorers with 27 points. Five of East’s losses have been to NAIA ranked teams (including three of the top five teams).
Alice Lloyd finished shooting 40% (26-65) from the field and 45.5% (10-22) from deep while connecting on 73.7% (14-19) from the foul line. They also added 32 rebounds, 16 assists, and 10 steals.
The Red Wolves finished shooting 44.9% (31-69) from the floor and 33.3% (6-18) from behind the arc. They shot an exceptional 95.8% (23-24) from the foul line. They also added 46 rebound, 16 assists, and 8 steals.
ALC returns to action on Tuesday, January 9 when they return home to face the Midway College Lady Eagles at 5:30 pm.
