Winchester, KY: The Alice Lloyd women’s and men’s cross country team traveled to Winchester, KY on Thursday, September 28th to compete in the Run for the Water Barrel Meet held at Lykins Park. The weather was exceptionally nice for both races.

A total of 15 men’s runners and 22 women runner’s from four colleges comprised the field for the 5K (3.1 mile) women’s race and 8K (5 mile) men’s race.

In the women’s meet, the Lady Eagles saw their top five runners all place in the top eight which earned them a convincing victory over Midway University, University of Pikeville, and Kentucky Christian University.

For the event, the Lady Eagles were led by sophomore Kacey Trout who completed the course with a solid time of 23:40 which was good enough for 3rd place. Juniors Brittney Buttrey and Rachel McCoy crossed the finish just behind in 5th and 6th position with times of 24:13 and 24:15 respectively. The freshmen duo of Morgan Arthur (24:37) and Taylor Bullock (24:42) were the next two overall runners to cross the line, and with their solid finish, team victory was assured by twenty points. Junior Cheyenne Boggs gave a good effort as well and ended the run in a time of 31:17.

In the men’s race, the Eagles ran a spirited race against Pikeville University, Midway University, and Kentucky Christian University and garnered a well-earned, one point victory. For the meet, the Eagles were paced by sophomore Ryan Morris, who crossed the line in 2nd position with a solid, season-best time of 30:31. Sophomore Noah Stephenson was impressive as well as he fought hard to break the tape in third place with a season-best 31:13. John Driskill bounced back from a leg injury to post a season best time of his own. The junior finished in 7th place with an impressive time of 31:45 and was followed by and sophomore Dustin Blair with a swift ninth place time of 32:31. In need of a big time from the critical fifth place runner to seal the win, the squad was ecstatic to see the ever-improving freshman Jacob VanHook complete the course in 11th place with a time of 33:36 and ensure the win. For good measure, freshmen Noah Smith and Tanner Whitton were the next two finishers with marks of 34:02 and 37:56 respectively.

By virtue of their solid team placement, the entire men’s squad has now qualified for the NCCAA Men’s National Cross Country Meet which will be held in Jackson, Mississippi and will join the Lady Eagles there in early November.

The next meet will be on Thursday October 12th. Both squads will race at Wise, Virginia in the Stinson Invitational. The race begins at 6pm.
