BEREA, KY: The Alice Lloyd women’s and men’s cross country team, under the guidance of Coach Brandon Arnold, traveled to Berea, KY on Saturday, September 16th and opened their season by participating in the challenging Berea College Invitational Meet. A very strong field was in attendance, and fortunately, the weather was exceptionally nice.

A total of 103 men’s runners and 120 women runner’s from 14 various colleges comprised the field for the challenging  5K (3.1 mile) women’s race and 8K ( 5 mile) men’s race. The course featured several small hills, a wooded section, and even a water obstacle that required everyone to run through the creek that was on campus.

In the women’s meet, the Lady Eagles were paced by sophomore Kacey Troutt who completed the course in 52nd place with a solid time of 22:13.  Juniors Brittney Buttrey and Rachel McCoy finished their runs with times of 23:54 and 24:15 respectively. Coming in fourth and fifth place were the freshmen duo of Morgan Arthur (24:54) and Taylor Bullock (25:44) while junior Cheyenne Boggs ended the run in a time of 30:02. For the event, ALC finished in 7th Place out of the 12 teams that participated.

In the men’s race, the Eagles were paced by sophomore Ryan Morris, who crossed the line in 44th position with a solid time of 31:32 while freshman Kevin Keathley was just over one minute behind as he completed the challenge in 32:40. Sophomore Noah Stephenson came in third with a time of 34:10 and was followed by junior John Driskill and sophomore Dustin Blair with times of 34:39 and 35:05 respectively. Following up the top five were freshmen Noah Smith and Tanner Whitton in 36:22 and 37:56 while fellow freshman Jacob VanHook completed the course in 38:45. For the event, ALC finished in 8th Place out of the 11 teams that participated.

By virtue of their solid team placement, the entire women’s squad has already qualified for the NCCAA Women’s National Cross Country Meet which will be held in Jackson, Mississippi in early November.

For the men, with their qualifying times, Morris and Keathley have already punched their ticket as individual runners and hope to see the entire squad join them by season’s end as well.

The next meet will be on Saturday September 23rd. Both squads will race at Rio Grande University in the Patty Forgey Invitational. The race begins at 1:15 pm.
