The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles hosted the Berea College Lady Mountaineers on Saturday. When the dust settled, the girls from Pippa Passes had earned a split as they roared back to win a thrilling second game.

In the series opener, the hosts fell 12-5. Alice Lloyd took an early lead in the second inning as they scored one run on a stolen base. Unfortunately, Berea took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning, and added to that an inning later, before the home club scored three runs in the sixth inning to get back in contention. The Eagles’ big inning was driven by an error and a double by Alexis Napier.

The Mountaineers scored five runs in the sixth inning to put the contest out of reach. BC’s big inning was driven by a home run by Abby Nash and a home run by Riley Lanham.

Jacquelyne Howard earned the win for BC. She tossed seven innings, giving up five runs, eight hits, and striking out five. Aly Webb took the loss for Alice Lloyd. She pitched seven innings, giving up 12 runs, nine hits, and striking out one.

The Eagles had eight hits in the game. Allison Shepherd and Laura Green each collected two hits for the hosts. Berea had nine hits.

In game two, the guests took a quick lead in the opening inning only to see ALC’s Samantha Sturgill belt a home run to tie things.

The visitors would add a few runs to keep the lead, but the home squad would continue to hang around and not let the Berea pull away.

Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth, ALC would put one runner on base with Rachel Cooper coming to bat. The prayers of the home faithful were answered when Cooper smashed a pitch over the left field fence for a huge home-run. Suddenly, the score was knotted again at 6.

Next, Sturgill came to the plate. With the crowd still yelling from the previous blast, Sturgill sent them into a state of delirium when she crushed a fastball over the fence for the second time that game. Now, the hosts led 7-6.

Allison Shepherd then took the mound for the Lady Eagles with renewed vigor and she promptly sat down the final six Mountaineer batters to earn the win for Alice Lloyd. She tossed seven innings surrendering six runs, seven hits, and striking out one.

Markiara Smith took the loss for Berea College. She went six innings, giving up seven runs, ten hits, striking out six, and walking one.

Elizabeth Prater, Alexis Napier, Cooper, and Sturgill each collected multiple hits for the victors. Sturgill led the way with three runs batted in going 2-for-2 on the day with 2 big home-runs.

The Eagles collected ten hits and BC had seven in the high-scoring affair.
