PITTSBURGH, PA: The Alice Lloyd Eagles placed five players in double figures to earn a big 77-68 victory over the home-standing Midway University Eagles.The River States Conference match-up was held on Tuesday, January 31 at Midway.
In the opening half, the visitors scored first and quickly looked to distance themselves from the home club. A triple from freshman guard Blake Smith would help the lead reach 12 (26-14) with 4:12 remaining. Unfortunately, Midway would go on a mini-run sparked by guard Will Hudson, and only trail 36-22 at intermission.
In the second half, the host Eagles would quickly explode out of the gate on a 16-2 run. The shell-shocked visitors suddenly found themselves trailing 42-36 with 15:19 remaining. Fortunately for the visiting fans, ALC responded.
Over the next five minutes, Alice Lloyd tightened up on the defensive end and used that momentum to go on a 15-2 run of their own. When sophomore forward Sean Ross sank a layup off a nice feed from junior guard Austin Crisp, with 10:05 showing, the visitors had re-established control of the scoreboard and led 49-44. ALC would eventually pull ahead by as many as thirteen points (66-53) on a Crisp trifecta at the 3:02 mark and the hosts never got within five points again.
For the victors (10-15; 6-7 RSC), Smith would lead the way with a team-high 18 points. Junior forward Jake Allen was right behind with his 16 point, 11 rebound (game-high) double-double. They were joined in double digits by Crisp with 15. He also dished off a game-high 9 assists. Ross and fellow sophomore forward Chance Cornett each chipped in with 12 points.
Alice Lloyd connected on 41.4% from the field (24-58) and hit 38.9% (7-18) from deep. They sank 81.5% of their free throws (22-27). Additionally, they had 46 rebounds, 17 assists, and 4 steals.
Midway University (2-19; 2-11 RSC) was led by Hudson’s game-high 22 points. His club hit 37.3% (25-7) of their field goals and 32.3% (10-31) from long range. They connected on 80% of their charity tosses (8-10). They also had 32 rebounds, 22 assists, and 7 steals.
The Eagles return to action this Saturday when they host the Asbury University Eagles in an important River States Conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 4:00 pm.
