On Monday, January 2nd, 2017, Alice Lloyd College presented two $1,000 dollar scholarships at the WYMT Mountain Classic Tournament Awards Night, which was held at Perry Central High School. These scholarships are presented to Appalachian high school seniors with high academic achievements as a means to extend educational opportunities, despite financial situations. Alice Lloyd College will match up to 10 scholarships presented to students who enroll at ALC through the college’s Tuition Guarantee Program.

Ruby Yeary, a June Buchanan Senior was honored with a scholarship that night. Ruby is the daughter of Paul and Rosa Yeary of Pippa Passes. As a June Buchanan student since preschool, Ruby gives the credit to her teachers, who have been there every step of the way, in helping her accomplish her goals. In addition to her classes at JBS, Ruby also participates in the JBS academics team (four years), basketball team (three years), volleyball team (two years), tennis team (two years), and serves as the team captain of softball team (three years). For the last two years, Ruby has worked during her school breaks through the Student Work at Alice Lloyd College.

Ruby mentioned, “JBS has helped me grow as a student because my classes have pushed me to work harder and they have taught me responsibility as well as time management. JBS really prepares students for college.” Ruby’s goal after graduating from JBS is to obtain her degree in Equine Science and Management, with the hope of giving back to her rural community one day.

Alice Lloyd College and the June Buchanan School are honored to be a part of this year’s WYMT Mountain Classic Tournament Awards Night.  Participating in this program helps further ALC’s mission of assisting the future leaders of Appalachia to obtain educational opportunities.
