PITTSBURGH, PA – The Alice Lloyd Eagles played solid defense as they defeated the home-standing Point Park University Pioneers 72-62 on Saturday, January 28. The River States Conference match-up was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
In the opening half, the visitors jumped out quickly backed by the one-two punch of junior forward Jake Allen and freshman guard Blake Smith. The Eagles would sprint to a 27-12 lead with 6:52 remaining as the duo would combine for 24 points. Alice Lloyd would settle for a 37-29 advantage at intermission.
In the second half, the Eagles would quickly extend their lead into the double digit column. They would see it reach its zenith of 18 (56-38) following a hoop from sophomore forward Chance Cornett at 12:14. The Pioneers would try desperately to get back in the game for the home crowd, but they were never able to get closer than 9 points as the Eagles earned the huge road victory.
For the victors (9-15; 5-7 RSC), Allen would lead the way with a team-high 18 points, and would complete the double-double with his game-high 13 boards. Smith just missed his own double-double as he jammed in 17 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. He also tied junior guard Austin Crisp with 2 assists each.
Alice Lloyd connected on 40% from the field (22-55) and hit 40% (4-10) from deep. They sank 75% of their free throws (24-32). Additionally, they had 43 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 steals.
Point Park (7-15; 4-8 RSC) was led by guard Asim Pleas with 22 points. His club hit just 28% (21-75) of their field goals and 14.8% (4-27) from long range. They connected on 84.2% of their charity tosses (16-19). They also had 46 rebounds, 7 assists, and 9 steals.
The Eagles return to action this Tuesday when they journey to Midway to face the Midway University Eagles in River States Conference action. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
