Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd Eagles dominated the second half against the visiting Welch College Flames to break open a close game and win 91-78. The matchup was played Saturday afternoon January 20th.
In the opening five minutes, the hosts rode two trifectas from freshman guard Blake Smith and a couple of nice hoops from junior forward Jake Allen, to sprint ahead 14-4. It appeared as if things would be easy
The Flames would respond, however, with a 12-0 run of their own to take the lead. They would battle the Eagles the rest of the way, and only trail 33-32 at intermission.
In the second half, backed by improved shooting and a big spark from sophomore guard Ryan House, Alice Lloyd would open the second half scoring at a blistering pace. They would produce thirty points over the first 9:30 of the second half to take a double-digit lead. From there, the hometown squad would see their advantage increase to as much as 18 points, and they were never seriously challenged again.
For ALC (7-14), Allen and Smith paved the way with 16 and 15 points apiece. House was right behind with 14 points, while sophomore forward Chance Cornett chipped in with 10 points. Allen completed the double-double as he garnered 11 rebounds, while junior guard Austin Crisp handed out 5 assists. The victorious club connected on 43.5% (30-69) from the field and a solid 40.9% (9-22) from long range. From the foul line, they hit an impressive 81.5% (22-27). They also had 44 rebounds, 7 steals, and 11 assists.
Welch was led by J.T. Jones, with a game-high 23 points. His club shot well, connecting on 50.9% (28-55) from the field and 45.8% (11-24) from long range. They sank 72.2% (13-18) from the charity stripe. They also had 26 rebounds, 5 steals, and 17 assists.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, January 24th when they travel to Montgomery, WV to face the West Virginia Tech University Golden Bears at 8:00 pm.
