PIPPA PASSES, Ky:  Senior forward Amber Shepherd and her teammates must have decided to give Coach John Mills an early Christmas gift. Sparked by Shepherds 30 points, they put together a solid game and defeated the highly-regarded Indiana University Southeast Lady Grenadiers 69-56. The contest was played Tuesday afternoon.

In the opening stanza, both clubs would come out tight. Enter Shepherd. The Johnson Central High School product drained three consecutive triples to spark her club. At the end of one period, the hosts led 21-16.

However, she was just warming up. Shepherd kept up her blistering offense in the second quarter as IUS could not find a way to stop her. When the buzzer sounded for intermission, she had already poured in 20 points on 6-7 field goals (5-7 threes) and 3-4 charity tosses. The Lady Grenadiers were certainly glad when halftime came and they only trailed 39-32.

Southeast is a tall and talented club and they showed their championship mettle in the third quarter. The visitors outscored the Eagles 17-12 in the period and would take a one point lead before the girl’s from Caney hit the last two buckets to end the quarter to with a small 51-49 advantage. The visitors definitely had the momentum with ten minutes remaining.

With the game anyone’s for the taking, Alice Lloyd responded. The Eagles tightened up the screws on the defensive end while junior Miranda Wilson and senior Sara Robinson sank several big buckets. The Lady Eagles would shut down their opponents and close the game on an 18-7 run to chalk up the game in the victory column.

For ALC (6-3; 2-2 RSC), Shepherd led the way with 30 points. This includes 9-16 from the field and 7-8 from the charity stripe. She added 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Wilson connected on 5-10 shots for 13 points while adding 5 rebounds and 6 huge steals. Robinson just missed a double-double with 8 points and 10 rebounds.

For Southeast, (7-4; 2-1 RSC), Jocelyn Mousty led three double-figure scorers with 12 points.

 Overall, the victors shot 43.3% (23-60; 8-24 threes) from the field and 64.3% (9-14) from the free throw line, while grabbing 36 boards, handing out 14 assists and grabbing 16 steals.

 IUS shot 33.3% (20-60; 4-14 threes) from the floor and 57.1% (12-21) from the free throw line. They added 36 rebounds, 5 assists, and 6 steals.

The Lady Eagles are off until January 3, 2017, when they return home to face the Ohio Christian Trailblazers at 5:00 pm.
