BEREA, KY: Alice Lloyd’s men’s and women’s cross country squads  got the 2016 seasons started on Friday night at a shortened meet hosted by Berea College/ Centre College. The men ran a 5K race while the women competed in a two-mile run. The event was the first opportunity for the young newcomers to see some experienced clubs and have a chance to get some of the early season jitters out.

On the women’s side, 86 runners towed the line for the two-mile dash. Serena Gale-Butto of Centre blazed across the finish line in a time of 11:32 to earn individual honors. For Alice Lloyd, sophomore Brittney Buttrey finished in a time of 13:23 for 26th place.  Freshman teammates Kacey Trout and Jillian Wolfe finished in 14:11 and 14:49 respectively.

For the men’s 5K, 107 runners left with the starting gun. Joseph Mullen (unattached) edged out Cumberland’s Sam Beal in a thriller (15:02.4 to 15:02.9). For ALC, freshman Ryan Morris crossed the line in 18:00 flat. He was followed by fellow frosh Nick Galloway (18:19), Dustin Blair (20:15), and Noah Stevenson (20:19).  Sophomores John Driskill and Zach Templeton completed the race in 20:52 and 20:18 respectively.

After a few weeks of practice and an opportunity to return some injured runners, the Eagles will return to Berea for the always competitive Berea College Invitational on September 17th.
