PIPPA PASSES, KY: The Alice Lloyd Eagles baseball team hosted the Concordia University Cardinals over the weekend for a 4 game series. The two squads split each day. Below are recaps of each game.

February 27

Game 1

CU 10; ALC-4

The Alice Lloyd College Eagles held tough, but Concordia University scored six late runs for a 10-4 victory.

Ryne Loggins paced the Eagles at the plate, going 1-3, driving in one, and scoring one run. He homered in the fifth inning.

Jon Targus got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He allowed three runs over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out 10, walked two and surrendered six hits.

Concordia University’s Micah Oetting, Jacob Maas and Marshall Oetting combined for six hits and six RBIs.

Justin Smith took the loss for the Eagles. He lasted six innings, walked two, struck out five, and allowed four runs.

The Cardinals added three more runs in the top of the fifth. The inning got off to a hot start when Oetting singled, scoring Jeremy Maas and Justin Mercer.

One run in the bottom of the fifth helped the Eagles close their deficit to 4-1. A solo home run by Loggins set off the Eagles rally. But, Targus got Austin White to strike out to end the inning.

Two runs in the bottom of the sixth helped the Eagles close their deficit to 4-3. A two-run single by Garret Gay gave the Eagles life. Finally, Keith Phillips got Austyn Turner to strike out to end the threat.

The Cardinals built upon its lead with six runs in the seventh. One run in the bottom of the seventh helped the Eagles close their deficit to 10-4 as a sacrifice fly by Hunter Millsap fueled the Eagles’ comeback. Phillips got the last out, as the Eagles’ Ronnie Saylor struck out.

February 27

Game 2

CU 3; ALC-4

Concordia University wasn’t able to overcome the big hole it dug itself into against the Eagles, and lost 4-3 after falling behind by three runs in the third inning.

In the top of the first, Concordia University grabbed the early lead, 1-0. Maas singled to ignite Concordia University’s offense. A groundout by Justin Mercer then moved Maas from first to second. Marshall Oetting singled, scoring Maas.

ALC went up for good in the third, scoring four runs on an error and two singles.

Concordia scored on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning and an RBI double by Jeremy Maas in the seventh inning. Despite its efforts, CU couldn’t get over the hump.

Hunter Millsap racked up two RBIs on two hits for the Eagles. He singled in the first and third innings.

Broderick Moore got it done on the rubber on the way to a win. He allowed three runs over seven innings. He struck out three, walked three and surrendered six hits.

Max Wardell ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. He lasted just 4 1/3 innings, walked three, struck out four, and allowed four runs.

 

February 28

Game 1

CU 0; ALC-1

Josh Antwine tossed a three hit shutout to propel the home standing Eagles to an impressive 1-0 victory in game 1.

ALC scored their lone run of the game on a groundout by Wyatt Hamilton in the fifth inning.

Fortunately for the hosts, Antwine’s dominance on the rubber befuddled the Cardinal bats. He pitched a shutout, allowing no opposing players to cross the plate on three hits while striking out three.

Marshall Oetting couldn’t get it done on the hill for Concordia University, taking a loss. He lasted just six innings, walked one, struck out seven, and allowed one run.

February 28

Game 2

CU 12; ALC-5

Alan Silva went 3-4 at the plate, but the Eagles fell 12-5 to Concordia University in game two.

The Eagles answered Concordia University’s 2 run top inning with 2 runs of their own in the first. The Eagles scored on a walk by Hayden Martin and a bases loaded walk by Garret Gay.

CU didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring four runs in the third inning then piled on three more runs in the top of the fourth.

One run in the bottom of the fifth helped the ALC close their deficit to 8-3. A passed ball triggered the Eagles’ comeback. But, Jimmy McKane got Timmy Sublett to strike out to end the inning.

Concordia University tacked on another four runs in the sixth including a homer.

A two-run seventh inning helped bring the Eagles within seven as an RBI single by Sublett fueled the Eagles’ comeback. Unfortunately,CU’s Mike Clevenger ended the game by getting Austin White to fly out.

Brendan Lyons got the win in relief for Concordia University, pitching three innings allowing no runs.

Ryan Lavy dropped the pitching decision for the Eagles, taking a loss. He lasted three innings, walked one, struck out one, and allowed five runs.
