PIKEVILLE, Ky. –The youthful Alice Lloyd Eagles softball team, under the guidance of first year coach Nathan Hall, started the season yesterday on the road with a doubleheader against The University of Pikeville Bears. Tuesday marked the first time ALC had been able to play outside, so the girls were immediately thrown into the fire. Following are recaps of each contest. 

Game 1

Bears Pitcher Lindsay Floydlifted the hosts (2-0) to a nail-biting 1-0 win in the opener, as she allowed just one hit, no runs, and one walk while striking out five during the complete-game effort. 

The lone run of the game crossed the plate for UPike in the first inning. Third baseman Breana Pineda scored the run after knocking a two-out triple, and then scored on an RBI single by shortstop Hollie Hinkle. 

Alice Lloyd starter Morgan Albury was charged with the loss despite a very powerful outing. The sophomore allowed just one run and finished the contest with 10 strikeouts and just two walks. 

Game 2 

ALC-0 UPike-17  

The hosts scored early and  won the second game in five innings. 

Alexandra Quill took the win as she allowed just one hit while striking out six and walking one batter. 

For the victors, Jillian Bohnert stood out, going 3 for 3 at the plate with a home run, double and four RBIs.  

The Bears outhit Alice Lloyd 15-1 for the game. The Eagles hurt themselves, finishing with five errors. 

Centerfielder Madison Haymaker connected on the Eagles’ lone hit. Caitlin Coburn took the loss after scattering four hits for eight runs.
