Jared tee 5The Eagles golf team played Ryder Cup style matches with West Virginia Tech at Stonecrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg, KY on Saturday April 18th. Since both schools are in the coalfields, a lump of coal was the winning prize. ALC won the matches and secured the lump of coal with a score of 3-2. Ryder Cup matches include team matches and singles matches. As each team had 3 players, the team matches were threesomes in a best ball format. This required one player in the threesome to play his own ball against the best ball of two other players. ALC #1 player Jared Albright competed against WVT #2 Steven Han and #3 Nathaniel Earl, winning the match 5 and 4. WVT #1 Alex Flores played ALC #2 Tanner Hensley and #3 Tyler Rogers, with ALC winning that match 2 and 1 to put ALC up 2-0 overall after the team matches.

In the singles matches, WVT #3 Nathaniel Earl defeated ALC #3 Tyler Rogers 8 and 7 to tighten up the series at 2-1, but ALC #1 Jared Albright defeated WVT #1 Alex Flores 3 and 2 to seal the victory for the Eagles. WVT #2 Steven Han defeated ALC #2 Tanner Hensley 2 up to complete the matches at 3-2 for ALC. WTV’s Steven Han also had a near hole in one on the 17th

Jared Albright finished his matches at 2-0, with all other players finishing at 1-1. Jared started both his matches very strong, and closed very strong when the scores tightened later in the matches. Tanner Hensley played solid golf in both his matches but fell to Steven Han’s great shot-making late in his singles match. Nathaniel Earl’s game caught fire after the 7th hole in his singles match, which was too much for Tyler Rogers to overcome despite a great effort.

West Virginia Tech is a team that is comparable to KIAC level competition. WVT is rated 151 in NAIA golf rankings, compared to Asbury at 148 and Cincinnati Christian at 153. ALC is ranked at 162. The future is looking brighter with every match for the ALC Golf Team.
