After weeks of delays due to the incredibly snowy weather conditions, the Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles softball program, under the guidance of first year coach Daniel Wilson, was finally able to take the field for the first time this season when they hosted the Point Park University Pioneers (PA) in a four game conference series on March 15th and 16th. When we say take the field, we literally mean take the field, as the ladies have been unable to practice outside at all. Below are recaps of each contest.

Game 1

PPU-11; ALC-1

Alice Lloyd scored in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Madison Haymaker walked to reach base and Tori Price hit an RBI double to right center to bring her home.

The Pioneers scored five runs in the second inning on the strength of three singles. From there, they extended their lead until the contest ended.

For the hosts, Haymaker and Price had one hit each, while Kayla Stambaugh suffered the loss on the mound.

For PPU, Kate Reese pitched a complete game for the Pioneers to earn the win.

Game 2

PPU-14; ALC-3

Alice Lloyd (0-2 KIAC) scored its runs in the first two innings. Haymaker got on base with a hit. That was followed by a single from Kayla Stambaugh which brought her home. In the second, after a pair of singles, Stambaugh drove them both home with a double to center field. The Eagles led at that point 3-0.

Unfortunately for the home squad, the Pioneers (5-5, 2-0 KIAC) scored seven runs in the third inning on six hits, including a home run by Alyssa McMurtrie. From there, the flood gates opened as PPU pulled away for the win.

For ALC, Stambaugh led the way with 2 hits and 3 RBI’s while Kayla Music went 3-3.

Whitley Albury showed some good signs but suffered the defeat on the mound while the visitors Hannah Harley earned the victory.

Game 1

PPU-13; ALC-2

The Pioneers jumped out early in the opening inning on the strength of 2 singles and a double; they would expand their lead to 6-0.

Alice Lloyd scored their first run courtesy of Price in the bottom of the inning. In the second inning, two hits and a hit batter loaded the bases. Price scored once again after two were out, but 6-2 is as close as the Eagles would get.

Alex Meade would suffer the defeat on the mound while PPU’s Sarah Urchek picked up the win.

Game 2

PPU-11; ALC-2

Point Park jumped ahead 4-0 in the first. Alice Lloyd got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Price singled with two outs and advanced to third on a passed ball and wild pitch. She eventually came home on a throwing error.

The Eagles earned their second run in the 4th inning when Megan Boswell slammed a double to drive in Price.

Kayla Stambaugh pitched hard but suffered the loss on the mound. The Pioneer’s Kate Reese was the winning pitcher.

Overall in the tough opening series, the Eagles showed some good signs at times and displayed definite flashes of potential. Simply getting the opportunity to finally play will pay dividends down the road. The next series is scheduled for this weekend as ALC travels to play the University of Cincinnati Clermont on Friday at 4:30 PM. They will then play a four game set on Saturday-Sunday at Indiana University-Southeast. The opening pitch is scheduled for noon on Saturday and 1:00 PM on Sunday. All games are weather permitting.
