Just a few weeks into the semester and Alice Lloyd College students are already working to make a difference in our community. Senior Tessa Amburgey, along with several other students, are diligently fundraising for Autism Speaks, the leading organization for awareness, treatment, and prevention for autism. Tessa says, “Autism is something that we all need to be aware of. Too many people don’t know what autism is, and it’s very prominent in America.” In fact, according to the CDC 1 in 68 infants are born with autism.

Autism Awareness is important because the children can’t always speak about it, so it’s up to us to be their voice and spread awareness. Senior Tonya Perry, a member that will be walking in the Walk-A-Thon had this to say, “This walk hits home for me because my nephew has Autism. He is a very special little boy and I wouldn’t change him for the world; I want to change the world for him.”

Tessa decided to start fundraising for Autism Speaks because she felt as though it was something that needs to be acknowledged. She has helped to set up a Walk-A-Thon in order to raise money for the organization. Participating members are currently collecting donations and pledges. Those pledging money will need to designate a specific amount (10¢, $1, $5, etc.) that they’re willing to pay the member for each lap they make during the Walk-A-Thon. However, they will gladly accept monetary donations up front from those who would rather not pledge. The Walk-A-Thon is expected to take place Thursday, February 5th, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the auxiliary gym on campus.

Tessa says that the group of volunteers hope to raise four hundred dollars. All of the proceeds will be donated to Autism Speaks. Contact Tessa Amburgey or another member of the group to join in the movement or make your pledge.
