The Alice Lloyd College Athletic Program has once again received recognition from the NAIA. ALC was recognized as a Champions of Character Five Star Institution and placed in the Silver achievement level.

According to the NAIA, schools were able to earn points according to their commitment to Champions of Character as demonstrated by character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition, and character promotion. Student-athlete GPA also played a factor and no ejections during competitions throughout the year. The Champions of Character program strives to instill five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. The program aims to help young people “make good choices in all aspects of life and reflect the true spirit of competition.” Activities inspired by the program has helped to touch 187,000 students, parents, and coaches with a character message, but at ALC the program goes farther than that.

Men’s Basketball Team

Recently, the Alice Lloyd College men’s basketball team was inspired by the one of the five core values: servant leadership. Coming from a college that emphasizes the importance of community involvement, it was no surprise when the team went out of their way to volunteer at the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center on November 8th. The team helped to clean in and around the Center, spent time with the veterans, and handed out gift bags as a small ‘thank you’.

ALC Director of Athletics, Gary D. Stepp, commented, “This award is a reflection of the commitment from our coaches and student-athletes to demonstrate how much character matters. Since Mrs. Lloyd and Miss June founded the college, the entire philosophy of our school has been one of service to others. This program is something our college family believes in wholeheartedly and is something we all take a great deal of pride in.”

Five Star Award recipients will be recognized on the NAIA Champions of Character website and receive a special web banner and certificate noting the honor. We are excited to have been awarded this achievement, and we are excited to see what this year holds for all of our athletes.
