The Alice Lloyd College Eagles cross country squad ventured to Portsmouth, Ohio this past Friday to participate in a big season opening race hosted by Shawnee State University
The weather was cooperative as the rain had subsided earlier leaving temperatures in the upper 60’s
On the women’s end, 54 ladies started the 5K race. For the Eagles, Allison Holbrook (Leslie Co.) was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 24:58. She was followed by Sullivan East (Tennessee) freshman Allie Bolling in 26:57. Rounding out the order was Katelin Hilton (Lawrence Co.) with a time of 28:57.
On the men’s side, 61 runners toed the starting line for the 8K race. When the dust had settled, Clay Montgomery (North Laurel) completed the course in 34:00. He was followed by Chris Baker (Bell Co.) with a time of 34:54
“I felt that this meet was a major test for our young squad”, commented Eagle Coach Gary D. Stepp. “These kids showed a lot of toughness against a very strong field. I know this will only help to make us stronger.”
Alice Lloyd will return to run again on September 20th, when they journey to Berea College.
