On Tuesday, February 25th, the Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles hosted Midway College in the first round of the KIAC Tournament. ALC was unable to get into any kind of rhythm as the home team was upset, 92-70.

Coming into this matchup, Alice Lloyd’s season was good enough to make them the KIAC third seed while the visitors from Midway College held the sixth seed. Early on, it looked like Alice Lloyd was going to set the tone in the contest as the hosts on the scoreboard jumped out front 10-7.

However, Midway showed that this game would be a lot different than the one that ALC won just ten days ago.

Midway stormed past Alice Lloyd halfway through the first half, and the home team found themselves down nine points with 6:04 to go (32-23). MC continued to build their lead, taking a 43-28 lead with two minutes remaining. Alice Lloyd did not have an answer for Midway’s red-hot 61% shooting from the field and trailed at halftime by fifteen points (47-32).

At other points in the season, Alice Lloyd had shown that they could overcome a double-digit halftime deficit. Unfortunately, though, the Lady Eagles were not able to make this one up against Midway.

ALC trimmed the lead down to fourteen with 15:12 left in the game (56-42), but this would be as close as they would get. Midway continued to keep the pedal to the metal and ballooned their advantage. The biggest lead for MC came with 5:54 remaining in the second half as the visiting Lady Eagles led ALC, 83-55. Midway outscored ALC, 45-38, in the second half. The upset victory was a statement win for the tournament’s #6 seed.

For Alice Lloyd, Ariel Nickell had 21 points and 9 rebounds in her final game for the Lady Eagles. It was not the ending that the Tazewell, Tennessee native wanted or deserved, but the senior forward has had a phenomenal career and became one of the greatest players, man or woman, to ever put on an Alice Lloyd College uniform. Carla Booth scored 20 points and hauled in 7 boards, while Taylor Arthur produced 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Miranda Rone paced Midway with 26 points.

Alice Lloyd shot 34% from the field while Midway made an impressive 53% of the shots they attempted. Midway was also excellent from long range, hitting 7 of their 14 threes. ALC struggled with its shooting behind the arc, only able to connect on 6 of its 22 long range bombs. Despite their hot shooting, Midway had a difficult time at the free throw line, going 15-for-26 (57%). To its credit, Alice Lloyd converted on 16 of the 19 free throws they tried, but their 16 turnovers on the night proved much too costly. Alice Lloyd’s Lady Eagles won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Midway, 44-38.

With the loss, Alice Lloyd ends its 2013-14 season with a record of 17-10 overall and 12-6 in the KIAC.
