Cody Stumbo

The Eagles traveled to Wilmore, Kentucky on Thursday, February 20th, to take on Asbury University. Alice Lloyd fought valiantly but came up just a little short in the end, losing by the final score of 79-75.

A chance to be the fourth seed in the KIAC Tournament and to host a first round game was what the Eagles were playing for on Thursday night. Five minutes into the first half, it was not the start that the visitors wanted. Asbury held a 13-6 lead. With 9:19 left in the first half, AU continued to lead (20-12). The lead for Asbury would stay around a six to eight-point gap for the rest of the half as Alice Lloyd trailed by a score of 38-32 going into intermission.

A fantastic start to the second half would see Alice Lloyd take a 39-38 lead two minutes in via a 7-0 run. With 14:30 to go, ALC continued to stretch their lead, making it 50-43. A bucket by Tyler Rogers made it 60-54 in favor of ALC with ten minutes to go. The Eagles wanted to this victory badly.

With seven and a half minutes remaining, AU tied the game at 62, and unfortunately, Asbury would take a 71-67 lead with 3:25 left. Alice Lloyd would fight back as Isaac Wilson made two foul shots to even the score at 73 with 1:12 left. AU was fouled with fifty-nine seconds remaining. Subsequently, the hosting Eagles made two free throws to make it 75-73. Moments later, ALC would tie it again with a basket by Rogers (75-75). The seesawing of the score would continue, though, as AU took a 77-75 lead with eighteen seconds to go. Alice Lloyd had one last chance to respond, but Stuart Stamper’s shot was blocked, allowing the home team to preserve the win.

Cody Stumbo paced Alice Lloyd (12-14, 7-9 KIAC) in scoring. The junior produced 18 points and 4 boards while Stamper had 15 points and 4 rebounds. Wilson and Rogers both had 13 points. The senior Wilson also dished out 7 assists.

For Asbury (17-10, 10-7 KIAC), Cam Richardson scored 18 points.

Alice Lloyd had an off-night shooting-wise, especially from the foul line where the team made only half of their 22 attempts.

The Eagles have one more shot at notching a win before tournament action begins. On Sunday, February 23rd, they will welcome the KIAC #3 Brescia Bearcats to Pippa Passes. This will be ALC’s final regular season home game and Senior Day activities will be observed. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 PM.
