State CapitolAlice Lloyd College is proud to announce the recipients of the Frankfort Semester Internship Program: Brett Preston (senior), Brittany Smith (senior), Jarrod Stamper (junior), Ashley Daily (junior), Brent Mills (junior), and Kristyn Densmore (sophomore). These students will be representing Alice Lloyd as they live, work, and study in the state capital during the 2014 spring semester.

Janet Johnson, the College’s Director of Career Services, said, “Having six students accepted into this program is a huge honor! This is a state record for the number of students receiving internships from one college.”

The internship program is supported by the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities (AIKCU). The program strives to expose students to a variety of people involved in policy development, to develop students’ ability to use their critical thinking skills, and to provide experience in their respective fields. The AIKCU website describes the students chosen to be interns as “demonstrating a deep curiosity about current events and the public policy-making process. They must also possess the responsibility to carry out assignments in a timely fashion and fulfill any other duties prescribed by supervisors with whom they are working.”

Ashley Daily, a junior majoring in Sociology and History, is very excited about the upcoming semester, saying, “The Frankfort internship is a great opportunity to see how state-level government and various agencies operate, as well as to gain work experience.”

Daily will be working for the Kentucky Retail Federation. The KRF is a non-profit trade association created to improve the retail business climate in Kentucky.

Along with getting first-hand experience with the legislative system by working directly with state legislators, students are able to expand their education outside of the traditional college classroom by taking evening classes with fellow interns. The interns’ work experience is supplemented by two upper-level evening seminars for which students are capable of receiving fifteen credit hours at their home college or university upon agreement.

Alice Lloyd College is pleased and proud to offer such excellent opportunities to our students.
