Cross CountryThe Alice Lloyd College Eagles Cross Country squad ventured to Danville, KY in the early morning hours on Saturday, September 14th, to participate in the challenging Centre College Invitational.

On the men’s side, 67 runners toed the starting line for the 8K race. When the dust had settled, sophomore Greg Randolph (North Laurel) crossed the finish line in 29:50. Randolph’s 27th place-finish was more impressive since this was the first time he has actually raced at this distance this calendar year due to a back injury. He was followed by sophomore Clay Montgomery (North Laurel) and freshman Donavan Johnson (Harlan Co.) who completed the course in 35:20 and 36:33, respectively.

For the women, 59 ladies started the race. Allison Holbrook (Leslie Co.) was the first ALC Eagle to cross the finish line. Her time was 24:48. Also representing ALC were Harlan Co. freshmen Kassie Rouse and Jennifer Graham. Their final times were 25:05 and 25:32. Newcomer Katelin Hilton (Lawrence Co.) gave a good effort as well, finishing the difficult course in 33:06.

“I think everyone worked hard, and it was a surprisingly nice race for Greg,” said coach Gary Stepp. Clay and Donavan both gave good efforts as well. The ladies were all a little disappointed with their times, but they each gave a spirited effort on a course covered with numerous rolling hills.”

Coach Stepp added, “I felt that this meet was an eye-opener for our young squad. These kids now see the caliber of competition that they will race against, and I believe they are motivated to push themselves even more. This will only help to make our club stronger come tournament time.”

Alice Lloyd will next run on September 21st when they will participate in the always-difficult Berea College Invitational.
