PIPPA PASSES, Ky. — Each year, Alice Lloyd College honors outstanding members of the campus community with awards that reflect the College’s time-honored tradition of servant leadership. The idea of “the servant leader” was inspired by Christ’s example, and the recipients of these awards are selected based upon their willingness to serve others for the good of everyone. The awards are handed out during the College’s graduation ceremony and include a $1,000 stipend.

The recipient of the “Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award” was Dr. Janelle Pryor, professor of biology at Alice Lloyd. Dr. Pryor was chosen for the award by three of her fellow faculty members and the president of the Student Government Association (SGA). She is a graduate of Ohio University where she earned a Ph.D. in Environmental and Plant Biology. Dr. Pryor later received a second Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Not only an excellent educator, she is also involved with various campus activities, including serving as faculty sponsor of the Allied Health Club and the Impact Club, which involves students in campus and community service projects while developing skills in leadership and citizenship.

Mrs. Priscilla “Pat” Fraley, Director of Foundation and Corporate Giving, was this year’s winner of the “Leadership in Service Award.” This award is given to a member of the College’s full-time staff who has been employed by the College for at least five years. Mrs. Fraley has devoted much of her lifetime to Alice Lloyd, having begun her campus career in 1963. She has dutifully served all five presidents of the College and watched as Alice Lloyd grew from a small junior college to the four-year, liberal arts institution that it is today.

Pat is a wonderful person who has given 50 years of service to the people of Appalachia through Alice Lloyd College,” said Joe A. Stepp, the College’s current president. “She leads by serving and has been totally committed to our mission in every post in which she has been asked to serve throughout her career.”

Mrs. Fraley began as a secretary before moving on to working as the Director of Gift Receipting, Director of the Central Information Office, and Assistant to the Director of Development before assuming her current position. During her decades of service at ALC, she has played a key role in making various campus improvements. Her fundraising efforts have helped to raise money to construct, renovate, or repair every single building on campus. Mrs. Fraley is a much-beloved and respected member of the college community in Pippa Passes, and in 2002, she was honored with the College’s “Alumna of the Year” award.

“Alice Lloyd has meant a lot to me and my family,” Fraley said. “I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College, and my husband, sister, and son all went to ALC. Had I not come to work here, it is very doubtful that any of my family would have gone to college.”

“I want my life to be one of service to God and my fellow man,” she continued. “I am grateful to be a part of the Alice Lloyd College family, and I hope I’ve helped to make a difference in some small way.”

With the time, loyalty, and commitment of such individuals as Dr. Pryor and Mrs. Fraley, it is certain that Alice Lloyd College will go on serving Appalachia for many generations to come.
