The June Buchanan School would like to congratulate Channing Everidge for being named a 2013 Governor’s Scholar.  Channing is the daughter of Steve and Angie Spady of Leburn, and Jeff and Kathy Everidge of Hazard; she is currently a junior at JBS.

Originating in 1983, the Governor’s Scholars Program was implemented to counteract the “brain drain” Kentucky was experiencing due to the best students of the Commonwealth leaving to pursue opportunities outside the state. By showing students that they have multiple opportunities for advancement right here at home, the Governor’s Scholars Program hopes to encourage the state’s best students to remain in Kentucky. Students who are selected for the program attend for free; however, the actual application process is very strenuous. The GSP committee considers each student’s class load, GPA, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, work positions, teacher recommendations, and a student-generated essay.

Once selected for the program, students will attend free of charge and will be placed at one of three college campuses throughout the state: Bellarmine University in Louisville, Morehead State University in Morehead, or Murray State University in Murray. During the program, Channing will have the opportunity to major in a specific area of study, complete a service-learning experience, and attend seminars led by a program faculty and staff, as well as special guest speakers.

Channing is no stranger to success, and we know she will make the most of this experience. Congratulations, Channing!
