Phi Beta Lambda has been busy planning their annual March of Dimes campaign. March of Dimes is the ALC chapter’s chosen community service project, and they specifically help local families. The March of Dimes program was started by President Franklin Roosevelt to help fight against the effects of polio and create a vaccine to prevent it. Once that goal was accomplished, the program began focusing on having a healthy pregnancy and educating people on birth defects of babies born prematurely.

The following events will be taking place after spring break:

A “Paint Campus Purple” campaign will be held on Thursday, March 21. We are encouraging everyone on campus to wear purple to increase awareness of children who are born prematurely.

A Zumbathon will take place in Cushing Hall on Thursday, March 21st from 6-8 pm. One 45-minute session will cost $3 or $5 for two 45-minute sessions. Brynnan Jacobs will be instructing the classes. Jacobs is a certified Zumba instructor. All money raised will go to March of Dimes.

The Blue Jeans for Babies convocation will be on April 2nd at 1 pm. The speaker will be Linda Newman, a Division Chair for the March of Dimes out of Somerset, Kentucky. Students, faculty, and staff are allowed to wear jeans WITH NO HOLES for a $1 donation. They will be required to wear a sticker, showing that they have donated, and will be allowed to get into class, the Hunger Din, and convocation wearing jeans. PBL members will be selling stickers in the foyer the week before convocation and also in the dorms. All proceeds will go to March of Dimes. Blue Jeans for Babies will be featuring our own Tiffany Combs’s sister and nephew, Crystal and Jonah Ritchie. Jonah is the Knott County March of Dimes Ambassador.
