My name is Candace Hoskins. I am a sophomore at Alice Lloyd College and work as an Admissions Ambassador. I am from a small town called Hyden, Kentucky. I attended Leslie County High School. My whole life, I have known that I wanted to work in the medical field. I have always had a passion for taking care of others. While in high school, I made sure that I took a lot of biology and chemistry courses, as well as a nursing assistant course where I earned my CNA license. Having the opportunity to take the certified nursing assistant class at my high school really influenced my decision in a career. It made me realize how strong my passion for the medical field really is, and it opened a lot of doors to help me explore my options. I was able to job shadow a variety of different jobs in the field, and my experiences shadowing also influenced my career choice. I am now a Biology Pre-Dentistry major. I plan on attending the University of Kentucky Dental School after graduating from ALC.

I come from a single parent household. My mother and I are extremely close. She has always been my number one fan and cheerleader. All through school, my Mom encouraged me to strive to be the best I could possibly be. Like myself, my mother was once a student at Alice Lloyd. She graduated in the class of 1993 and is now a fourth and fifth grade teacher at W.B. Muncy Elementary in Leslie County. My Mom has always been such an inspiration to me. She has taught me the value of getting an education and being independent. I have always known that she wanted nothing but the best for me and that she would always support me. Mom has pushed me to succeed since day one! She has never wanted me to waste any of my potential. I am so thankful now for the way she has raised me, because the work ethic she has instilled in me is definitely paying off.

When it came time to start looking at colleges, I knew what her number one choice would be. Since I was old enough to know what college was, I’ve always heard about Alice Lloyd. When I was young, I thought it was the only place to go, so I guess you could say I’ve been an ALC Eagle since birth. As I started my search, I knew that ALC would definitely be an option because it was a reasonable distance from home, a small campus, and based on Christian principles. I also looked at a few other schools that fit the same criteria. One thing that really stood out about ALC was their affordability. My whole life, I have been striving for good grades and getting a good ACT score because I knew that the only way I would be able to afford college was by getting scholarships.

I am a recipient of the Distinguished Scholars Scholarship here at Alice Lloyd. When I graduate I will leave college completely debt-free! This school really makes me feel like all my hard work and effort paid off; and, it is comforting to know that ALC will even be assisting me when I attend graduate school through the Caney Scholars Program.

When I visited ALC, I saw what set the College apart from my other choices. Being on campus for the very first time, I could instantly feel the family environment. Everyone here welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like I was at home. It was this loving atmosphere that reeled me in, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the choice I made to attend Alice Lloyd College. Thank you for providing me with that choice.
