L-R: Eric Conley, ALC Executive Vice President Jim Stepp, and Chuck Mullins

by M. B. Miller

Alice Lloyd College and The June Buchanan School were each recently presented a check from Kentucky River Properties LLC in an informal meeting held at the College’s June Buchanan Alumni Center. Assistant Chief Engineer Chuck Mullins and In-house Counsel Eric Conley (JBS alumnus) were on-hand to offer the gifts to ALC’s Executive Vice President Jim Stepp

Kentucky River Properties has long been a friend of the College and JBS, and their generosity has provided much-needed aid to both schools for years. Based in Lexington, KY, the company leases its lands to area coal companies for mining purposes, which has the potential to create hundreds of jobs in the region. The company also routinely gives to schools in locations where they own property, which is yet another way in which they are helping a poor corner of America sustain itself in difficult economic times.

“Alice Lloyd College serves a great need in this area,” said Chuck Mullins. “The money can be used to fund scholarships and tuition, but we don’t specify how the money should be utilized. We just want to help the students.”

That goal is similar to the chief missions of the schools, which is to provide a high-quality education to mountain students regardless of their ability to pay.

“We’re extremely grateful for the friendship and support of Kentucky River Properties,” Jim Stepp said. “They have been an important partner in uplifting the Appalachian area, and their generosity will help Alice Lloyd College and The June Buchanan School to continue to provide a high quality education at a low cost to our students.”
