Festivities Set for October 13th

by M. B. Miller

It’s hard to believe, but festival time has returned to the mountains. Autumn has settled down again in Appalachia, coloring the leaves and bringing a nip to the air. People celebrate with warm cider and carnival food; music fills the streets of town and vendors show off their talents with handmade crafts. Here at Alice Lloyd College, we are preparing for yet another Appalachia Day Homecoming, our own day of festivities in which we welcome alumni back to campus, as well as a whole host of visitors.

Everything kicks off at 9 AM on Saturday, October 13th. The event lasts all day on the College’s campus in Pippa Passes, KY. This year’s Appalachia Day Homecoming is made extra special due to the fact that we are also celebrating the College’s 95th Anniversary. So, please join us as we honor Appalachian culture and heritage with traditional music, mountain crafts, a book signing by writers from the region, and delicious food. Most of the activities will take place between the hours of 10 AM and 5 PM.

Alice Lloyd alumni will want to make sure they don’t miss the annual Alumni Association Meeting, which will be held in the Ralph Edwards Auditorium at 1 PM. A reception will follow in Cushing Hall. In addition, alumni athletic activities are scheduled throughout the day.

This year, ALC is excited to feature a special program for the event’s younger guests: ALC’s Caudill Players, a student-led theatre troupe, will perform Anne Shelby’s much-beloved The Adventures of Molly Whuppie. In addition, they will have fun and games for children of all ages. The College is also pleased to welcome The Penny Loafers back to the ALC campus! A crowd favorite, this a capella quartet from Berea, KY will delight you in a free concert – open to the public – at 7 PM in the Campbell Arts Center.

So, don’t miss out! Come on home to Alice Lloyd!

If you’d like more information about ALC’s guests The Penny Loafers, check them out on their website.
