The Penny Loafers

The Caney Convocation Series, along with the Appalachia Day Homecoming Committee, is pleased to present The Penny Loafers in concert on Saturday, October 13th, at 7 PM. This concert is free and open to the public; however, we are also offering this special event as convocation credit to our students. Students may dress casually, but we do ask that all clothing be appropriate and conservative.

In the time The Penny Loafers have been together, they have gained a loyal following, appealing to young and old alike through a blend of musical styles and tight, a cappella harmonies. From 50s doo-wop to contemporary gospel, The Penny Loafers’ repertoire includes a healthy dose of original material and fresh arrangements of traditional favorites. Add some impressive vocal calisthenics and you have the “Loafer Style,” a unique, crowd-pleasing sound that has frequently earned The Penny Loafers standing ovations at their performances.

The group was formed in 1985 when four Berea College students sang an a cappella arrangement of “Happy Trails” for a campus talent show. For several years the group existed only as a hobby as members came and went. In the fall of 1991, the Loafers decided that it was time to go on the road full-time.

The Penny Loafers have enjoyed performing and leading worship across the country for churches, youth and social events, universities, arts series, corporate banquets, and convention general sessions. Each of the Loafers serves churches in pastoral ministry and/or music ministry. Though no longer on the road full-time, these active musicians are still singing throughout the country.

In 2010, the group celebrated 25 years of loafin’ together. There have been some membership changes since that first performance, but the foursome of Alan Pike (bass), Larry Nichols (baritone), Kevin Slemp (2nd tenor), and Michael Hunt (1st tenor) have been singing together since 1994.

Alice Lloyd College is excited to welcome this very entertaining group to campus. Please join us for convo for what is sure to be a memorable night. Doors open at 6:30 PM at the Estelle Campbell Center for the Arts (CAC).
