Opening Convocation at Alice Lloyd College took place on September 11th, 2012 at 1:00 PM in the Estelle Campbell Arts Center with Terry Dean Jacobs as the guest speaker. The convocation began with an invocation by Mr. Shane Sturgill. Afterwards, President Joe Stepp opened with some remarks about the improvements made to the school, focusing on the renovations that have been made to Lilly Hall and to the McGaw Library. He said that more much-needed changes were soon to come!

“We have been blessed in many ways since the College’s founding in 1923,” said President Stepp. “We’ve got an outstanding faculty and staff. Our faculty will work with you and challenge you.” Then, Tiffany Owens, ALC’s new Marketing Director, took the stage to announce the College’s recent mention on The Today Show.

Afterwards, Terry Dean Jacobs was introduced by Ms. Victoria Hammonds. Jacobs is originally from Knott County, Kentucky where he attended school and grew up. He graduated Alice Lloyd College, and, after being inspired by Ms. June Buchanan, went on to become elected as the youngest judge in the state at the age of 26 in 1993. In 1995 Jacobs was recognized as The Troublesome Creek Times’ “Man of the Year.”

Presently, Mr. Jacobs serves as the attorney for Alice Lloyd College and owns a private practice in Knott County. He relayed the stories of working with June Buchanan, what she stood for, and how she inspired him to attend law school to become all that he is today. Jacobs closed his speech with the words, “If you look at the literature on the signs, one thing that Alice Lloyd, Miss June, and the president have said and always believed in is that the leaders are here.”

ALC’s Caney Convocation Series continues with “convos” on September 18th and the 20th (two convocations) as we observe Religious Emphasis Week.
