The Alice Lloyd Eagles opened up the 2012 Cross Country season on Saturday morning as they participated in the Knott County 5K run, which was held during the Gingerbread Festival in Hindman. The conditions were wet, but fortunately, the hard rains held off until the race was completed.

On the women’s side, freshman Allison Holbrook (Leslie Co.) looked impressive as she completed the course in a time of 22:17 to earn first place overall. Holbrook took the lead from the onset and never relinquished it.

She was followed by sophomore Amanda Ashworth (Perry Co.) and juniors Ashley Foster (Peebles, OH) and Jerkia VanDyke (Oakwood, VA) who each worked very hard. Their times were 34:06, 34:31, and 35:34, respectively.

On the men’s side, freshman Greg Randolph (North Laurel) blew away the field as he completed the race in 17:13. Randolph sprinted to the lead with the opening gun and steadily increased it until he broke the tape at the finish line.

Fellow freshman Ethan Bowling (Jenkins), along with sophomore Jimmy Noble (Buckhorn), also made solid showings as both cracked the top five. Bowling crossed the line third in 19:55, while Noble trailed his buddy by only nine seconds (20:04) to finish fourth.

Good efforts were also given by freshman Tyler Turner (Harlan Co.) and Jonathan Aldana (Belfry) as they finished with times of 25:55 and 25:58.

After the race, Coach Gary Stepp said, “This was a good chance for our young kids to get a race under their belts before the first conference meet. I was pleased with the effort from everyone, and I am seeing steady improvement. As long as we stay healthy and continue to work hard, I will be satisfied with the results.”

The next meet will be on Saturday, September 15th, at Berea College in a big conference race. Start time is set for 10 AM.
