The June Buchanan School held its annual spelling bee only a few weeks ago in which 8th-grader Hunter Hylton was the school’s champion speller. Hunter advanced on to the Middle School Spelling Bee held in Knott County on February 17th at Knott County Central High School.

Hunter represented JBS well by winning the countywide competition, which means that he is now advancing on to State! He will participate in the Kentucky Derby State Spelling Bee in Louisville on March 10th at the PNC Club at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. The competition is being sponsored by the Ford Motor Company and the University of Louisville.

The Ford Motor Company Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee has become one of the festival’s most noteworthy and far-reaching events. The sponsorship of the Ford Motor Company makes the event possible, as well as the support of WHAS-AM News Radio 84, the University of Louisville, KET, Churchill Downs, and Kentucky Farm Bureau. Last year, sixty-two students from Kentucky and Southern Indiana participated in the statewide competition, going through 216 words before determining a champion. If Hunter wins, he could collect a $10,000 savings bond and other prizes.

Congratulations again and good luck to Hunter as he participates in this event!
