The Alice Lloyd College Eagles, under the guidance of Head Coach Scott Cornett, opened up the 2011-12 season Wednesday afternoon on the road against the University of Pikeville Bears. The Eagles were their own worst enemy on the day, as they committed several costly errors in dropping a 10-1 decision.

Despite the recent onset of horrendous weather, which featured a six inch snowstorm and region wide power outages, the two clubs were able to get the contest under their belts.

In the top of the second inning, ALC placed the first dent in the scoreboard. Left fielder Jeff Cyrus stroked a single and was driven in by a line drive single from designated hitter Bobby Caldwell. The visitors quickly led 1-0.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Bears scored 2 runs on two ALC errors. Unforced errors would prove to be the Eagles’ Achilles heel the entire game. They committed a total of seven errors on the day, which led to 5 unearned runs for Pikeville.

Over the next seven innings, UPike was able to tack on at least 1 run in six of them and slowly extended their lead.

For ALC (0-1), Cyrus added a double and had two of the Eagles’ three hits. Pitcher Trevor Corns took the loss on the mound. Corns pitched 2-2/3 innings and gave up five hits and 3 runs of which only 1 was earned. He also whiffed two UPike batters.

Pikeville (2-3) was led by Pat O’Brian who smacked three of the Bears twelve hits. Kyle Robertson earned the victory on the mound.
