On Tuesday, February 7th, ALC will welcome the second speaker in its Caney Convocation Series. As part of Black History Month, Tom Ingrassia, a motivational speaker, life coach, and Motown historian, will be on campus to present Motown and the Civil Rights Movement. About this special program, Ingrassia says, “In this engaging multimedia presentation, I trace the development of, and interconnections between, the escalating popularity of The Motown Sound – “The Sound of Young America” – and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.” Promising to be an entertaining and enlightening event, students are encouraged to participate in this informative and timely convo. Mr. Ingrassia is an accomplished music journalist with more than 25 published articles, many of which have appeared in magazines ranging from Billboard to Goldmine to the San Francisco Hot Ticket. He has worked with various artists on collaborative projects, including Mary Wilson from The Supremes on a coffee table book about her life. And that’s not all. Ingrassia is a true chameleon, having served in roles as various as an entertainment consultant (interestingly, for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, among other places), an entrepreneur, a beauty pageant judge, and academic dean. About his desire to share his philosophy of life and success, he has said, “I’ve learned that living life successfully – and achieving your dreams – takes great courage and often a willingness to take a risk or two. We continually face great opportunities disguised as unsolvable problems. We all have the power within us to achieve our heart’s desire. All you need is the key to unleash that power.” Please join us tomorrow, February 7th, at 7:30 PM in the Estelle Campbell Center for the Arts on the campus of Alice Lloyd College to meet this very accomplished guest. Mr. Ingrassia promises to “take you on a trip back in time, to a turbulent era in American history, when the music of Motown reigned supreme, when Motown truly was ‘The Music of Young America.’” To find out more about this speaker, visit his website.
