PIPPA PASSES, KY. – Alice Lloyd College student–athletes, along with various campus organizations, brought an abundance of smiles to many area children this Halloween as they hosted the third annual “Trunk or Treat” in Pippa Passes. The event took place on October 31th from 6pm till 8pm.

ALC’S Dean of Students and head baseball coach, Scott Cornett, helped organize the festivities. “Our goal in planning this was to get all of our student groups, clubs, organizations, and athletes involved in a community project. We also wanted to give our young men and women the opportunity to give a little something back to the region that has been so supportive of us.”

In “Trunk or Treat,” groups of college students brought their vehicles to various areas on campus with the trunks stuffed full of tasty treats that the little ghosts, goblins, superheroes, and princesses would love. When the children came by, the college students took time to talk with each of them and comment on the kids’ costumes. Many of the ALC students themselves dressed the part, which helped add to the fun factor.

Gary D. Stepp, ALC’s Director of Athletics, added, “I was extremely pleased with the response from our college students. It is encouraging to see how well our student-athletes embrace the ‘Champions of Character’ philosophy, and they went above and beyond what we expected. We plan on making this a mainstay on our campus, because the turnout is always excellent. Our students really love meeting the children, and our students receive much more than they give from participating.”

Junior cross country runner Kimberly Schroeder was one of the many students to participate. “I think Trunk or Treat is a fantastic opportunity for kids to have fun trick or treating, but have a safe environment in which to do it. I know that when I was younger I would have loved to have had an opportunity to go to a college campus, interact with different athletes and students, and get candy as well. I also know my family would have felt good, knowing it was a safe environment for me to be in.”

Mrs. Deborah Holbrook brought her daughter Riele and her best friend Elisabeth to the event. “Trunk or Treat on the ALC campus is a fun and safe event for the kids and gives them time to socialize with their friends outside of school.  The ALC students, faculty, staff, and community members give out candy, dress up, and have just as much fun as the children.” Mrs. Holbrook added,”It reminds me of an old—fashioned Halloween. Children walk down the street safely, being greeted by friends enjoying Trunk or Treat, while parents visit with one another and enjoy a sense of community.”
