The June Buchanan School celebrated Grandparents Day on Friday, October 7th. Grandparents were invited to sit with their grandchildren to watch the performance of “Celebrate America,” featuring JBS students, preschool through 12th grade.  The presentation was followed by an old- fashioned Ice Cream Social in the Hunger Din on the campus of Alice Lloyd College.

The celebration activities opened with a greeting from JBS Dean Amanda Clark, followed by prayer and the singing of our National Anthem along with the Pledge of Allegiance. JBS students sang in chorus songs such as “My Country Tis of Thee,” “When the Flag Goes By,” “This Land is Your Land,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” “Fifty Nifty United States,” and “My Old Kentucky Home.” In addition, students shared the recitation of The Battle Hymn of the Republic and a collection of poems titled “Our Heroes.” The students also read scripture in honor of the principles on which the United States of America was founded. For the past few weeks, students rehearsed the program with JBS Music/Choir instructor, Wendy Saylor, and their performances showed excellent pride in their country and school.

During the song “God Bless the USA,” without having been prompted, grandparents, parents, teachers, faculty, and students slowly rose in honor of God’s blessing on our nation by raising their hands in worship as the lyrics “and I gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today, ‘cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land, God bless the USA” were sung.  Many were touched as tears streamed along with the words that rang true to the JBS family audience.  JBS instructor Larry Hayes stated, “You just don’t see this everywhere.” Karen Bailey, another JBS instructor, said, “I am so glad to be a part of a school family who stays true to its mission and honors God not only in assemblies like the one we saw today, but also every day in the classroom.”
