The Alice Lloyd College Eagles held their annual Eagle Madness event before a large crowd at the Grady Nutt Athletic Center last night. The old adage “they shot the lights out” literally happened as a complete area–wide blackout occurred during the height of the festivities.

The event was the kickoff to the upcoming Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams’ season, but other college groups, including Women’s Volleyball, Women’s Tennis, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Baseball, Men’s Golf, Women’s Softball, Cheerleading, and Dance Team, were also recognized for their efforts.

The event began with the introductions of all teams. Next, the 2011-12 edition of the Lady Eagles Basketball team was presented to great applause. The women then gave the audience a preview of good things to come by treating the crowd to a partial scrimmage.

Next, the Cheerleading and Dance Squads entertained the crowd with their choreographed routines. They definitely impressed the audience with their high–octane performances.

The last team to be introduced was the 2011-12 Men’s Basketball squad. The crowd was worked into a fever pitch by the team introductions. Immediately after Coach JR Hammond was introduced, the lights suddenly went out. At first, most thought it was part of the show. In actuality, a blown transformer off campus caused the blackout, which lasted for over two hours and affected the entire region. The unforeseen mishap forced the cancellation of the men’s scrimmage, 3–point shooting contest, and slam dunk competition.

Despite the premature ending, all in attendance had a great time, and the campus is definitely anticipating the upcoming round ball season.

Regular season opens at home on Tuesday, November 1st, as both squads face the always tough Kentucky Christian University Knights in a doubleheader. Tipoff is set for 6pm for women and 8pm for men.
