Alice Lloyd College alumnus and Board of Trustees member, Townsell G. Marshall, passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2011. Townsell, a native of Floyd County, resided in Monroe, Ohio with his wife of sixty-six years, Mary.  He was ninety years old.

Townsell earned an Associate of Arts degree at Caney Junior College in 1941, and continued his studies at the University of Kentucky while living in Alice Lloyd’s Caney Cottage in Lexington.  During World War II, Townsell served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the China-Burma-India theatre.  Following the War, he worked in the Industrial Engineering Department of Armco Steel Corporation at Ashland, Kentucky.  In 1961, Townsell transferred to Armco’s corporate offices in Middletown, Ohio.  Here he served as the top labor negotiator until 1965, and then headed Industrial Engineering for the Corporation.  Subsequently, Townsell supervised the corporate personnel department and long-range planning of the Steel Group.  In 1982, he retired as Assistant Vice President of Special Projects.

Townsell also made his mark on many civic and professional organizations in both Kentucky and Ohio.  While in Ashland, he served on the executive committees of the Board of the Ashland YMCA, the Tri-State Area Council of Boy Scouts of America, and the Ashland Board of Trade.  He also chaired the Board of Associated Industries of Kentucky.

In Ohio, Townsell served as the state’s industry member on the Labor-Management Man Power Commission—Region IV.  He has also been a member of several Boards including the Arts in Middletown, Browns Run Country Club, Middletown Rotary Club, American Heart Association, Butler Human Services, Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Communities, and the Mound Builders Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Townsell was one of Alice Lloyd’s most faithful and devoted alumni and has been a member of the College’s Board of Trustees since 1966.  He served as Board Chairman from 1975-1990.  During his tenure as Chairman, Alice Lloyd College became a four-year institution, and The June Buchanan School was established.

Townsell and his wife, Mary, were blessed with three children: Townsell Gordon, Jr.; Rebecca Jane Danner; and Joseph Fleming (deceased); eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
