The JBS art students are enjoying a wonderful year. Recently, ten students participated in the Morehead State Regional Art competition. This was their first time to compete and they came away with not only a great experience, but won two first place, one third place, an honorable mention, and the BEST of SHOW in 3D!  Organizers of the show commented how exceptional it was for a school to do this well in it’s first year of competing.

Bridget Howard, a junior at JBS, received “Best of Show for all 3D Categories” in the competition.  The dress she created, entitled “The Love Letter Dress,” is composed of black lace and beautiful love letters  transferred on to fabric.   After the state competition, Bridget plans to wear her dress, and even plans to designs shirts and bags in this style as well.

Channing Everidge, a freshman at JBS, received first place in the Multicultural Art category, with her oil, entitled, “Hope for Haiti.”  It was inspired by her stepfather’s mission involvement after the earthquake in Haiti. Channing also received an honorable mention in the Painting category, for her oil entitled, “Catch and Release.”

Jackie Henderson, also a freshman, received first place in the Fiber Arts category, for her beautiful creation entitled “A Coat of Stories,” which illustrates the story of Joseph and his special coat.  Jackie also received third place in Graphic Design, for her innovative shoe design entitled, “Cool Dog 23.”   All of these students will advance on to state competition.   Art Instructor Grace Henderson, and parent volunteer Angie Spady, consider themselves blessed to be working with such talented students.

In addition to getting projects ready for competition, the Art Appreciation class recently hosted an exhibition entitled, “The Art and Culture of Native American Tribes.”  From Inuit dioramas, samples of Navajo fry bread, and even Zuni turquoise, the students had a wonderful learning experience.  Congratulations to all of the art students who participated and showed creativity throughout the year!
