The Alice Lloyd Eagles put up a valiant effort, but still dropped an 85-76 decision to the highly regarded Asbury University Eagles last night.

ALC seniors Daniel Combs, Will Jones, and Charles O’Steen (Hazard) were recognized before a large home crowd before tipoff.

In the first half, Asbury sharpshooter Phillip Morrison got the guests off to a torrid start by draining 3 three point buckets. AU led by as many as 15 before a late Alice Lloyd run cut the deficit to 45-35 at intermission.

In the second half, Asbury maintained their double figure lead until the 7 minute mark. At this point ALC began one last run at the visitors. Sparked by seniors Daniel Combs (Viper) and Will Jones (Manchester), the hosts sliced the deficit to just 6, with four minutes remaining. Asbury then scored on their next possession to end the last serious threat to their victory.

For Alice Lloyd (8-21, 4-9), Combs led the way with 26 points. He also passed the 1000 point mark for his career in the closing minute of the game. Fellow senior Jones added a solid 18 point, 8 rebound effort to the cause, while freshman guard Issac Wilson contributed 13.

Asbury (20-7, 11-2) was led by Morrison’s 26 points.
