The Alice Lloyd Lady Eagles traveled to Milligan College last night to play the highly regarded Milligan Buffaloes. The hosts had to withstand a furious second half rally before prevailing, 58-54.

In the first half, MC defense was the name of the game as ALC did not score until the 14:39 mark. Cold shooting continued to plague Alice Lloyd throughout the half as they only registered seventeen points by intermission and trailed by seven at the break (24-17).

In the second half, back to back three’s by Buff guard Johneshia Good gave her club a 36-21 lead with 15:30 remaining.

Over the next four minutes, ALC chipped away at the lead and reduced the margin to six on a Nicole Lutes (Jackson, Ky.) bucket. Milligan then went on an 11-2 run to increase their lead to fifteen with 6:07 remaining. Things at this point looked bleak for the guests.

However, Eagles coach John Mills has a group that refuses to quit. Much to the stunned amazement of the Buff fans, Alice Lloyd, fueled by 8 points and two big three’s from junior forward Gemma Gray (Manchester), went on a 15-0 run to knot the score at 53 apiece with 3:00 remaining.

Both squads each hit a free throw over the next two minutes. MC’s 6’0 center Ashley Mainer then connected in the paint with 1:00 left to put her club ahead by two (56-54).   The Eagles than ran the clock down patiently looking to get a good shot to tie the game or take the lead. Unfortunately, they lost the ball and were forced to foul with only 15 ticks remaining. Milligan then sank the two charity tosses to end the scoring.

For ALC, (6-10) they were led in scoring by Ariel Nickell (Claiborne, Tn.), who finished with a game high 17 points. Gray added 10 while Whitney Frazier (Louisa) chipped in with 9.

Mainer led Milligan (14-6) with 14.
