The home standing IU Southeast women’s basketball team won its eighth consecutive game by defeating the Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles Wednesday night 73-69, but not before being battled down to the wire in a dogfight.

The Grenadiers are the defending KIAC champions, and have shown this season with several quality wins that they fully intend on keeping their title. However, in the first half, solid defense by the Lady Eagles limited Indiana’s scoring opportunities, and ALC was able to forge ahead 42-30 by intermission.

In the second half, IUS opened on an 11-0 run to chip away at the deficit. Grenadier guard Ashmere Woods tossed in 18 second half points to fuel the comeback. Alice Lloyd refused to fold, however, and held on to their slim lead throughout the next 12 minutes.

With only 1:00 remaining, ALC led 67-66. Then, Southeast guard Morgan Hunsaker connected on a big three pointer (her only basket of the game) to put her squad up 69-67. After a Lady Eagle miss, Indiana was able to hit four free throws and pull out the win.

For Alice Lloyd (4-8, 0-1 KIAC), they were led in scoring by freshman Ariel Nickell (Claiborne, Tn.)   She continued her fine play with 21 points and a game high 16 rebounds. Joining her in double figures was senior Chelsee Jarrell (Paintsville) with 11, and senior Whitney Frazier (Louisa) and freshman Courtney Crowder ( Harrogate, Tn.) with 11 each. Junior Gemma Gray added 8 points and 9 rebounds to the cause.

For IUS (11-4, 2-0 KIAC) Woods led all scorers with 28 points.
